Caloric Surplus – What It Means and When You Actually Need One
A caloric surplus means consuming more calories than your body burns – this is the fundamental requirement for building muscle. A daily surplus of 200-400 kcal is sufficient for muscle growth; anything beyond that significantly increases the rate of fat gain. Without high protein intake (at least 1.8-2 grams per kilogram of body weight) and consistent strength training, most of the surplus will be stored as fat. With a well-calibrated surplus and a proper training program, the majority of weight gained will be muscle.
