Thermogenesis: How Your Body Burns Calories Through Heat Production
Thermogenesis is the process when your body produces heat and burns calories in the process, divided into four main types. Basal metabolic rate thermogenesis (BMR) is resting heat production, activity thermogenesis (EAT and NEAT) comes from movement, thermic effect of food (TEF) from digestion, while adaptive thermogenesis is adaptation to cold or diet. NEAT, or non-exercise activity, is the most variable factor that can cause up to 2000 calorie differences between people. Increasing thermogenesis can burn more calories, but the effect is limited, diet and total activity matter most.
