How Does the DOTS Strength Calculator Work?

The DOTS Strength Calculator estimates your DOTS score by comparing your powerlifting total with your bodyweight. DOTS is a bodyweight-adjusted formula designed to make powerlifting totals more comparable between lifters of different sizes. The calculation uses your sex category, bodyweight and combined squat, bench press and deadlift total.

Term What does it mean? In the calculation Why does it matter?
DOTS Score A bodyweight-adjusted score used to compare powerlifting totals between lifters of different bodyweights. Total × 500 ÷ denominator It provides a standardized way to express relative powerlifting strength.
Powerlifting Total The combined result of your best squat, bench press and deadlift. Total in kg A larger total generally produces a higher DOTS score when bodyweight is held constant.
Bodyweight Your current body mass used by the DOTS polynomial. kg DOTS adjusts the relationship between total strength and bodyweight rather than simply dividing the total by bodyweight.
Sex Coefficients Separate polynomial coefficients are used for the male and female DOTS equations. Sex-specific polynomial The coefficient set changes the denominator used to calculate the final score.

1. Enter Your Bodyweight

Enter your current bodyweight in kilograms or pounds. If you select pounds, the calculator converts the value to kilograms before applying the DOTS equation.

2. Enter Your Total

Your powerlifting total is the combined weight of your best squat, bench press and deadlift. The calculator converts the total to kilograms before applying the formula.

3. Calculate the DOTS Score

The appropriate sex-specific DOTS polynomial is calculated from bodyweight, and your powerlifting total is then multiplied by 500 and divided by that denominator.

Male DOTS denominator:
−307.75076 + 24.0900756W − 0.1918759221W² + 0.0007391293W³ − 0.000001093W⁴

Female DOTS denominator:
−57.96288 + 13.6175032W − 0.1126655495W² + 0.0005158568W³ − 0.0000010706W⁴

DOTS score:
Powerlifting total × 500 ÷ DOTS denominator

W = bodyweight in kilograms.

DOTS is a relative-strength scoring formula and should not be interpreted as an official ranking by itself. Competition performance can also be affected by weight-class rules, equipment, judging standards, competition conditions and other factors. What is a DOTS score?

A DOTS score is a bodyweight-adjusted measure of powerlifting strength. It uses your powerlifting total and bodyweight to produce a score that can be compared between lifters of different sizes. A higher DOTS score means a stronger total relative to bodyweight under the DOTS formula.

How is a DOTS score calculated?

The DOTS formula uses your bodyweight in kilograms to calculate a sex-specific polynomial denominator. Your powerlifting total is then multiplied by 500 and divided by that denominator. The result is your DOTS score.

What is a good DOTS score?

There is no single DOTS score that defines a good lifter because standards depend on experience, age, competition level, equipment and other factors. DOTS is most useful as a relative-strength metric rather than an absolute measure of ability. Comparing your score with your own previous results can also be useful for tracking progress.

Does bodyweight affect your DOTS score?

Yes, bodyweight is a fundamental part of the DOTS calculation. The formula adjusts the relationship between your powerlifting total and bodyweight rather than simply dividing your total by your bodyweight. This allows totals from lifters of different sizes to be compared using the same scoring system.

What lifts are included in a powerlifting total?

A powerlifting total consists of your best successful squat, bench press and deadlift results. These three lifts are added together to produce the total used by the DOTS calculator. For competition comparisons, the lifts should be performed according to the applicable competition rules.

Is DOTS better than simply comparing powerlifting totals?

DOTS can be more informative than raw totals when comparing lifters with substantially different bodyweights. A heavier lifter will often have a larger absolute total, while DOTS attempts to account for bodyweight when expressing relative strength. It is still only one scoring method and does not capture every factor that determines competitive performance.
