lb
US customary units are selected by default. You can switch to kilograms and centimeters.
3

Your height

ft
in
Height is converted to centimeters internally for the energy expenditure equation.
4

Your activity level

Choose the level that best reflects your daily movement and training. Activity factors are estimates.
5

Your calorie goal

Your daily target is based on estimated maintenance calories plus your selected adjustment.
6

Calorie cycling intensity

Sets how far your higher-calorie days sit above your daily average. Your weekly total stays the same.
7

Higher-calorie days

The remaining days receive a lower calorie budget so your weekly target is preserved exactly.

How Does the Zigzag Calorie Calculator Work?

The Zigzag Calorie Calculator estimates resting energy expenditure using the Mifflin–St Jeor equation, then applies an activity factor and your selected calorie goal. It distributes your weekly calorie budget across higher- and lower-calorie days without changing the weekly average. This approach is called calorie cycling. The redistribution is a mathematical budgeting method, not a separate metabolic prediction equation.

Term What does it mean? Calculation Why it matters
Resting Energy Expenditure (REE) An estimate of calories your body uses at rest. Mifflin–St Jeor equation (kcal/day) Provides the starting point for estimating maintenance calorie needs.
Sex, age, weight, and height The input variables used in the equation. lb converted to kg, ft/in converted to cm, age in years, and a sex-specific coefficient Calculations use metric values internally, regardless of your selected display units.
Activity factor A multiplier used to estimate the effect of daily movement and exercise. 1.20 / 1.375 / 1.55 / 1.725 / 1.90 Helps estimate total daily energy expenditure. These factors are approximations.
Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE) Estimated calories burned throughout a typical day. REE × activity factor Establishes the estimated maintenance calorie level.
Daily calorie target Your maintenance estimate adjusted for your goal. TDEE − 500 / − 250 / + 0 / + 250 kcal, rounded to a whole number Determines the daily average that the zigzag schedule preserves.
Weekly calorie budget The total calories allocated to seven days. 7 × rounded daily target Higher- and lower-calorie days must add up to this exact amount.
Higher-calorie days Two or three selected days with a larger budget. Rounded daily target × (1 + 0.10 / 0.15 / 0.20) Allows more calories on selected days without increasing the weekly total.
Lower-calorie days The remaining four or five days. (Weekly budget − total higher-day calories) ÷ number of lower days Balances the higher days to preserve the selected weekly calorie average.
Lower calorie limit A basic planning guardrail used by this calculator. 1,200 kcal/day The calculator does not generate days below this threshold. It is not an individualized medical safety limit.

1. Estimate Calorie Needs

The Mifflin–St Jeor equation estimates resting energy expenditure from weight, height, age, and sex. An activity multiplier then estimates daily maintenance calories.

2. Calculate the Weekly Budget

The selected weight goal adjusts estimated maintenance calories. The resulting daily target is rounded and multiplied by seven to determine your weekly calorie budget.

3. Distribute Weekly Calories

Higher days receive 10%, 15%, or 20% more calories than the daily average. The remaining calories are allocated to lower days while preserving the exact weekly total.

1. Mifflin–St Jeor equation:
Male: REE = 10 × weight (kg) + 6.25 × height (cm) − 5 × age + 5
Female: REE = 10 × weight (kg) + 6.25 × height (cm) − 5 × age − 161

2. US customary unit conversions:
Weight (kg) = weight (lb) ÷ 2.2046226218
Height (cm) = (feet × 12 + inches) × 2.54

3. Daily and weekly calorie targets:
TDEE = REE × activity factor
Daily target = round(TDEE + goal adjustment)
Weekly budget = 7 × daily target

4. Zigzag calorie distribution:
Higher day = round(daily target × (1 + cycling intensity))
Remaining lower-day budget = weekly budget − (higher days × higher-day calories)
The remaining budget is divided among lower-calorie days using whole-calorie allocation. Any rounding remainder is distributed across those days.

Example calculation:
Daily target: 2,000 kcal
Higher days: 2
Cycling intensity: 15%
Higher-day target: 2,300 kcal
Lower-day target: 1,880 kcal
Weekly total: (2 × 2,300) + (5 × 1,880) = 14,000 kcal/week
Weekly daily average: 2,000 kcal/day

Scientific methodology:
Mifflin MD et al. (1990). A new predictive equation for resting energy expenditure in healthy individuals. American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, 51(2), 241–247.
The calorie cycling schedule uses weekly energy budget redistribution, not a separately validated metabolic prediction formula.

Zigzag calorie cycling can provide flexibility when planning meals, training days, and weekends. It has not been established as inherently more effective for fat loss than a consistent daily calorie intake with an equivalent weekly total. Estimated energy needs may differ from actual needs, so longer-term weight trends can help guide adjustments. This information is educational and is not medical advice.

Zigzag Calorie Calculator helps you distribute your weekly calories across higher- and lower-calorie days without changing your daily average. It estimates your calorie needs using the Mifflin–St Jeor equation and adjusts them for your weight goal. You can customize your calorie cycling intensity and schedule for weight loss, maintenance, or weight gain. The method offers greater meal-planning flexibility, but does not inherently produce faster fat loss than an equivalent consistent calorie intake.

What Is a Zigzag Calorie Diet?

A zigzag calorie diet alternates higher- and lower-calorie days while maintaining a consistent weekly calorie average. You can allocate more calories to training days, weekends, or social occasions and eat less on other days. This approach can make calorie tracking more flexible without changing your overall weekly energy target.

How Do You Calculate Your Weekly Calorie Budget?

First, estimate your resting energy expenditure using the Mifflin–St Jeor equation and apply an activity multiplier to estimate maintenance calories. Next, adjust your daily calorie target according to whether you want to lose, maintain, or gain weight. Multiply that daily target by seven to calculate your weekly calorie budget, which is then distributed across the week.

Is Zigzag Calorie Cycling Better for Weight Loss?

Weight loss primarily depends on maintaining an energy deficit over time. Research has not established that alternating higher- and lower-calorie days produces greater fat loss than a consistent calorie target when overall energy intake is comparable. Zigzag calorie cycling may still be useful if its flexibility helps you follow your nutrition plan more consistently.

When Should You Schedule Higher-Calorie Days?

Higher-calorie days can be scheduled around demanding workouts, busy weekends, or social events. This allows you to allocate more of your weekly calories to days when additional food may be more convenient. Exercise performance and recovery also depend on factors such as carbohydrate intake, protein intake, sleep, and overall nutrition.

How Low Should Calories Be on Lower-Calorie Days?

Your lower-calorie targets depend on your weekly budget, the number of higher-calorie days, and your chosen cycling intensity. Extremely low calorie intakes can make it difficult to meet nutritional needs and sustain your routine. This calculator does not generate days below 1,200 calories, but that threshold is not an individualized recommendation or guarantee of nutritional adequacy.

How Can You Track Weight Loss With a Zigzag Calorie Plan?

Daily body weight can fluctuate because of changes in hydration, glycogen storage, sodium intake, and digestion. Tracking average weight trends over several weeks is generally more useful than judging progress from a single weigh-in. If your longer-term results differ from your goal, you can reassess your estimated calorie needs and adjust your weekly calorie budget.
