How Does the TSS Calculator Work?

The TSS Calculator estimates Training Stress Score from your ride duration, Normalized Power (NP) and Functional Threshold Power (FTP). TSS is a cycling-specific training-load metric that combines how long you exercised with how hard the effort was relative to your FTP. The calculation also produces your Intensity Factor (IF), which shows the ride's intensity relative to your threshold.

Term What does it mean? In the calculation Why does it matter?
TSS Training Stress Score, a metric used to quantify the training load of a cycling session. Duration × IF² × 100 It combines exercise duration and intensity into a single training-load score.
Normalized Power A power metric designed to better represent the physiological demands of a variable-power ride than a simple average-power value. NP The calculator uses NP to represent the overall intensity of the ride.
FTP Functional Threshold Power, the reference power used to represent your cycling threshold. FTP FTP provides the personal reference point against which Normalized Power is compared.
Intensity Factor The ratio between Normalized Power and Functional Threshold Power. NP ÷ FTP It expresses how demanding the ride was relative to your threshold.

1. Calculate Intensity Factor

The calculator first divides Normalized Power by Functional Threshold Power. This produces the Intensity Factor, or IF, which expresses the ride's power relative to your threshold.

2. Combine Intensity and Duration

TSS increases with ride duration, but intensity has a squared effect through IF². This means a harder ride can accumulate training stress substantially faster than a lower-intensity ride of the same duration.

3. Produce the TSS Score

Duration in hours is multiplied by the square of Intensity Factor and then multiplied by 100. A one-hour effort performed exactly at FTP corresponds to 100 TSS.

Intensity Factor:
IF = Normalized Power ÷ Functional Threshold Power

Training Stress Score:
TSS = duration in hours × IF² × 100

Equivalent standard form:
TSS = (duration in seconds × NP × IF) ÷ (FTP × 3600) × 100

TSS is a training-load metric rather than a direct measurement of calories burned, fitness or recovery. The result depends heavily on the accuracy of your Normalized Power and FTP values and is most meaningful when those inputs accurately represent your current cycling performance.

TSS Calculator estimates your cycling Training Stress Score from ride duration, Normalized Power (NP), and Functional Threshold Power (FTP). The calculator uses the standard TSS formula based on duration and Intensity Factor, with IF calculated as NP ÷ FTP. It also shows your Intensity Factor so you can understand how hard the ride was relative to your threshold. TSS is a training-load metric, not a direct measure of calories burned, fitness, or recovery.

What is a TSS Calculator?

A TSS Calculator estimates the training load of a cycling session using duration and power relative to your Functional Threshold Power. It combines these factors into Training Stress Score, giving you a standardized way to compare the relative demands of different rides. TSS is most useful when your FTP and power data accurately reflect your current cycling performance.

How is Training Stress Score calculated?

Training Stress Score is calculated from ride duration and Intensity Factor, with intensity having a squared effect. The standard relationship is TSS = duration in hours × IF² × 100, where IF is Normalized Power divided by FTP. A one-hour effort at exactly FTP corresponds to 100 TSS.

What is Intensity Factor in cycling?

Intensity Factor, or IF, compares your Normalized Power with your Functional Threshold Power. An IF of 1.00 means your Normalized Power equals your FTP, while a lower value represents an effort below threshold. IF helps put the intensity of a ride into context rather than looking at power alone.

What is a good TSS score for a workout?

There is no single TSS score that is ideal for every workout because training load depends on the athlete, training phase, recovery capacity, and overall weekly workload. A short intense session can produce a similar TSS to a much longer easy ride because TSS accounts for both duration and intensity. The most useful comparison is usually between your own sessions and your broader training history.

Does a higher TSS mean a better workout?

A higher TSS means greater calculated training stress, but it does not automatically mean a better workout. Excessive training stress without sufficient recovery can interfere with subsequent performance, while lower-TSS sessions can be valuable for aerobic development, recovery, or maintaining training consistency. TSS should therefore be interpreted as a workload metric rather than a quality score.

How accurate is a TSS Calculator?

A TSS Calculator is only as accurate as the power and FTP values entered into it. Normalized Power is designed to account for the changing demands of variable-power cycling, while FTP provides the reference point for calculating intensity. Because FTP can change over time and testing methods differ, keeping your FTP estimate reasonably current improves the usefulness of your TSS calculations.
