Sauna Frequency and Duration Based on the Finnish Cohort

The Sauna Calculator compares your weekly sauna frequency and the amount of time you spend in the sauna per session with the sauna-use categories used in the Kuopio Ischaemic Heart Disease Risk Factor Study. The table below shows how participants were grouped in the study.

Sauna use Finnish cohort category What does it mean?
1 session / week 1× / week One of the primary comparison groups in the study.
2–3 sessions / week 2–3× / week A separate sauna-frequency category examined in the study.
4–7 sessions / week 4–7× / week The highest sauna-frequency category examined in the study.
<11 minutes / session <11 minutes One of the sauna-duration categories examined.
11–19 minutes / session 11–19 minutes The middle sauna-duration category examined.
>19 minutes / session >19 minutes The longest sauna-duration category examined.

How does the Sauna Calculator work?

The calculator does not estimate personal health risk. It places your weekly sauna frequency into one of three categories: 1×, 2–3× or 4–7× per week, and then places your session duration into one of three categories: <11, 11–19 or >19 minutes.

Why does frequency matter?

The Finnish study separately analyzed how many times participants used a sauna each week. The researchers compared the 1, 2–3 and 4–7 sessions-per-week groups, which is why the calculator uses these same categories.

Why does session duration matter?

The study also grouped sauna sessions by duration: less than 11 minutes, 11–19 minutes and more than 19 minutes. The calculator therefore considers both how often you sauna and how long each session lasts.

Which study is this based on?

The categories are based on the Kuopio Ischaemic Heart Disease Risk Factor Study analysis published in 2015 by Tanjaniina Laukkanen, Hassan Khan, Francesco Zaccardi and Jari A. Laukkanen. The prospective cohort study followed 2,315 men aged 42–60 living in Eastern Finland, with a median follow-up period of 20.7 years.

Sauna Calculator shows which Finnish research category matches your weekly sauna frequency and the amount of time you spend in the sauna per session. It uses the 1, 2–3 and 4–7 sessions-per-week categories and the <11, 11–19 and >19 minutes-per-session categories used in the Finnish cohort study. Your result shows which research category your current sauna habits correspond to. It is a simple comparison tool, not a personal health-risk or life-expectancy calculator, informational purposes only, not medical or health advice.

How many times a week should you sauna?

The Finnish cohort study grouped participants into 1, 2–3 and 4–7 sauna sessions per week. This calculator uses the same categories so you can easily compare your own sauna frequency with the groups used in the research. These categories should not be interpreted as universally optimal sauna frequencies for everyone.

How long should you stay in a sauna?

The Finnish study divided sauna session duration into three groups: less than 11 minutes, 11–19 minutes and more than 19 minutes. The calculator uses these same duration categories when determining your result. Your actual session length should always be appropriate for your individual tolerance and the conditions of the sauna.

What did the Finnish sauna study investigate?

The 2015 study analyzed sauna habits among 2,315 middle-aged Finnish men participating in the Kuopio Ischaemic Heart Disease Risk Factor Study. Researchers examined sauna frequency and duration alongside several long-term health outcomes. Because the study was an observational cohort study, its findings do not prove that sauna use itself caused the observed differences.

What does sauna 4–7 times per week mean?

Four to seven sauna sessions per week was the highest sauna-frequency category in the Finnish study. A total of 201 participants were included in this category. In the calculator, this simply means your weekly frequency matches the highest frequency group examined in the study, not that you need to sauna this often or that it is optimal for you.

Is sauna use associated with living longer?

The Finnish cohort found that more frequent sauna use was associated with lower observed risks of several mortality outcomes. However, the study was observational, so it cannot establish that sauna use itself caused these differences. For this reason, the calculator does not provide a personal life-expectancy or mortality-risk prediction.

What temperature did people use in the Finnish sauna study?

The average sauna temperature reported in the study was approximately 79°C. This matters because different sauna types, temperatures and bathing practices are not necessarily directly comparable. The calculator therefore only applies the study's frequency and duration categories rather than assuming that its findings apply identically to every type of sauna.
