TEF Calculator estimates the calories your body uses to digest, absorb, and process the food you eat. It calculates TEF from your protein, carbohydrate, and fat intake because each macronutrient has a different thermic effect. Protein has the highest thermic effect, while dietary fat generally has the lowest. Use the result as an estimate when understanding your total daily energy expenditure and calorie needs.

What Does TEF Mean?
TEF means thermic effect of food, which is the energy your body uses to digest, absorb, and process the nutrients in your food. It is one component of total daily energy expenditure alongside resting metabolism and physical activity. Protein generally creates the largest thermic effect, followed by carbohydrates, while fat has the smallest.
How Is TEF Calculated?
TEF can be estimated by applying different thermic-effect percentages to the calories supplied by protein, carbohydrates, and fat. This calculator uses approximately 25% for protein, 7.5% for carbohydrates, and 1.5% for fat as practical midpoint estimates. The individual results are then added together to estimate your total daily TEF.
How Many Calories Does TEF Burn?
The number of calories burned through TEF depends largely on how much you eat and the macronutrient composition of your diet. A higher-protein diet will generally produce more thermic expenditure than a diet providing the same calories primarily from fat. TEF is therefore better understood as a variable component of calorie expenditure rather than a fixed daily number.
Does Protein Increase the Thermic Effect of Food?
Yes, protein generally has a substantially higher thermic effect than carbohydrates or fat. A meaningful portion of the energy contained in protein is used during digestion, absorption, and metabolism. This is one reason protein intake can be useful when designing a diet for fat loss, muscle retention, or muscle growth.
Does TEF Matter for Weight Loss?
TEF contributes to your overall daily energy expenditure, so it can influence the number of calories your body uses each day. However, TEF is only one part of energy expenditure and should not be treated as a separate calorie-burning strategy. For fat loss, maintaining an appropriate calorie deficit over time remains the primary factor.
How Can You Increase Your Thermic Effect of Food?
Increasing the proportion of protein in your diet can raise TEF because protein requires more energy to process than carbohydrates or fat. Eating enough protein while maintaining an appropriate calorie intake can therefore contribute to a higher thermic effect. Your overall calorie intake, activity level, resistance training, and dietary consistency still have a much larger practical role in determining changes in body weight and body composition.
