What Is a Reverse Diet?
What Is a Reverse Diet? A reverse diet is a gradual calorie-increasing strategy that is often used after an extended period of dieting. Instead of suddenly returning to a much higher calorie intake, calories are increased in smaller steps while monitoring body weight and other feedback. The goal is generally to approach a sustainable maintenance intake while keeping changes in body weight under control.
How Does Reverse Dieting Work?
During a reverse diet, you start with your current calorie intake and gradually increase it while monitoring your weight trend and other signals. There is no scientifically validated rule saying that every person should add exactly the same number of calories each week. For this reason, calorie increases are best treated as practical adjustments based on how your body responds.
How Many Calories Should You Add During a Reverse Diet?
There is no universally proven optimal calorie increase for everyone. Smaller increases, such as approximately 50–100 calories per day, can be a practical starting point because they give you an opportunity to monitor your response. This calculator therefore uses a conservative initial increase rather than recommending a large jump in calorie intake.
Does Reverse Dieting Speed Up Your Metabolism?
Reverse dieting should not be treated as a guaranteed metabolism-boosting method. Energy expenditure can change during weight loss for several reasons, including changes in body weight and spontaneous physical activity, while increasing energy intake can affect some of these adaptations. This does not mean that a specific calorie-increase protocol automatically creates a permanent increase in metabolic rate.
What Happens If I Gain Weight During a Reverse Diet?
Increasing your calorie intake can cause short-term increases in body weight without an equivalent increase in body fat. Higher carbohydrate intake can increase glycogen stores and the water associated with them, while changes in food volume can also affect scale weight. Because of this, it is better to evaluate your weight trend over multiple days or weeks rather than reacting to a single weigh-in.
How Long Should You Reverse Diet?
There is no fixed duration that everyone needs to follow for a reverse diet. You can gradually increase calories until you reach a sustainable intake where your body weight and overall goals are progressing in a way that works for you. Once you are close to your estimated maintenance intake, there is no reason to automatically keep increasing calories.
