The Ponderal Index Calculator estimates your Ponderal Index from your height and body weight using the formula body weight in kilograms ÷ height in metres cubed. Unlike BMI, the Ponderal Index uses height to the third power, making it a different mathematical way to relate body mass to body size. Enter your measurements to calculate your result instantly, using either metric or imperial units.

What Is the Ponderal Index?
The Ponderal Index is a mathematical measure that relates body weight to height cubed. It is calculated by dividing body weight in kilograms by height in metres cubed. Because it uses height³ instead of height², it differs from BMI in how body size is represented mathematically.
How Is the Ponderal Index Calculated?
The Ponderal Index equation is PI = body weight (kg) ÷ height (m)³. First, height is converted into metres and multiplied by itself three times. Body weight in kilograms is then divided by that value to produce the final Ponderal Index.
What Is a Normal Ponderal Index?
There is no single universal Ponderal Index value that can be interpreted in the same way for every person. The result is a mathematical measurement rather than a complete assessment of body composition or health. Age, sex, muscle mass, body fat distribution and other individual factors are not captured by the equation.
What Is the Difference Between Ponderal Index and BMI?
BMI divides body weight by height squared, while the Ponderal Index divides body weight by height cubed. This difference changes how the mathematical relationship between height and body mass is represented. Neither calculation directly measures body fat percentage or distinguishes muscle from fat.
Why Is Height Cubed in the Ponderal Index Formula?
Height is cubed because the Ponderal Index was designed around a different mathematical scaling relationship between body mass and height than BMI. The equation therefore uses height³ rather than height². This makes the Ponderal Index a distinct calculation rather than simply another version of BMI.
Can the Ponderal Index Tell Me How Much Body Fat I Have?
No. The Ponderal Index does not directly measure body fat percentage, muscle mass or fat distribution. It is best understood as a mathematical body-size index, and more detailed body-composition methods are needed when those measurements are the goal.
